Toure was one of the first A list players City’s Abu Dhabi owners signed in a bid to overtake United as the dominant force in English football.
Eight years later they have done it, after three Premier League titles, three League Cups, one FA Cup, qualification for the Champions League in each of the last seven seasons as well as finishing above United in six of the eight seasons Toure has played for them.
Asked if City had knocked United off their perch in the same way their neighbours had dislodged Liverpool as the pre-eminent force in the game in the 1990s, he said: “Yes, definitely. When I came to City, for us to be a big club, we had to put them in our shadow.
“United were in our way, we had to remove them. They were such a force and they won the League in my first season. We knew it would be difficult but beating them in the FA Cup semi-final that season was a big part of it.
“I said when I came I wanted to leave the club with big achievements. We made it and it was perfect.
Pep Guardiola believes Yaya Touré is still capable of playing at the highest level as the midfielder prepares to make his final appearance at the Etihad.
Touré will leave Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of the season and Wednesday’s night meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion will see the Ivorian given what Guardiola last week called a “beautiful farewell”.
The City manager believes that Touré, who turns 35-years-old on Sunday, will be a success if he decides to stay on in Premier League football but he stopped short of offering his departing player any career advice.
